The marula nut is an unknown delicacy as the harvesting of the nut is a very labour intensive affair: the nut is encased in a hard stone pit that first needs to dry for several months before it can be opened with tools only by hand, nut by nut. It has therefore never become a commercially exploited nut like the other nuts like walnut, pistachio or macademia.
